Cosmology in a New Light

Recent experimental data of distant supernovae suggests that our knowledge of the universe and its dynamics needs to be fundamentally re-evaluated. Evidence seems to be accumulating, that the expansion of the universe is in fact accelerating; [Per97-99], [Ri98]. This strong evidence $ ^{\text{\scriptsize\cite{ch2au1}}}$, if verified, would lead to profound alterations in the way we think of the universe and old problems in cosmology would re-appear in a new and interesting light. This could mark the start of a paradigm shift in physics at the beginning of the 21 $ ^{\text{st}}$ century.

It may come as an even greater surprise that the notion of an accelerated expansion and all its consequences are not new or revolutionary from a theoretical point of view.
